VisualVM 1.3.x instead of Eclipse TPTP?

was two weeks ago announced that the Eclipse project for test and performance tools - TPTP - after the upcoming update to version 4.7.2 (scheduled for February 2011) no longer developed.

One of the aspects that I liked to TPTP, was the ProbeKit , which could leave little Java snippets to certain points in a Java class (method input and output, etc.) weave to the classes Running time to investigate.

One possible replacement is already waiting in the wings. Mid VisualVM 1.3 was released, which now is available in version 1.3.1. This includes the tracer plugin can be used to enable various "probes" for a running application, which then synchronously among themselves represented on a timeline:

Currently there are predefined probes for Swing, JavaFX and (etc. Collections, I / O) for various other packages in the standard class library. The tracer framework should be simple but can be expanded with its own probes (although I still do not found a link to a current developer documentation have) - and maybe there in the near future a sample to the AOP moderate-weaving of small pieces of code? This request must be allowed, after all, so almost Christmas :-)

Whether you can download VisualVM separately, or whether it is in the installed JDK already mentioned, we find on the Release Index . The current Java 6 Update 22 brings unfortunately still with the older version 1.2.2 VisualVM.

Oracle brings Java SE 7 for Mac OS X

... and Apple is also in Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" still provide your own Java SE 6 implementation. These are briefly summarized the results of the last Days.

After it was three weeks ago quite dark looked to the future of Java on Mac OS X because Apple discontinued its own Java implementation, but offered no substitute on the horizon, had, it now looks as if if we get exactly the solution that was favored by many: Apple brings to most parts of its Java implementation as open source into a OpenJDK project, and Oracle will come of it - starting with Java SE 7 - The Official Java releases for Mac OS X build.

It is still not clear when will Java SE 7 for Mac OS X are available and how the source code in the Details are provided. But the future for Java on Mac OS X, this should ensure.

has the way, where Apple announced in the press release that even the next year published Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" over his own will include Java SE 6 implementation, so that for the transitional period, to Oracles Mac Java implementation there is a clear perspective.

Well, then. Why did not you say so?

Scala 2.8.1

before yesterday was released with only a few days late Scala 2.8.1 . In addition to numerous bug fixes

contains the fix above all an improved version of Scaladoc . One result this tool example, is the API documentation of the Scala standard library .

Scala 2.8.1 is fully binary compatible with previous version 2.8.0 (which before that was by no means self-evident, but now the declared aim to stabilize the software development with Scala).

is from today also presented the Scala IDE for Eclipse in an updated version. Due to the binary compatibility of the Scala 2.8.x versions you can first use the latest Scala IDE and existing projects to either translate continue to Scala 2.8.0 until a suitable transition to 2.8.1 appears.
